Title: Romulus and Remus Medium: Impressionism / Fine Art Print Artist: Charles David
This Romulus and Remus fine art print depicts two sculpted heads placed side by side upon a windowsill — silent sentinels carved from stone, their hollow crowns sprouting faint traces of life. The faces, stern and symmetrical, echo the mythic duality of brotherhood and destiny. Light filters through the shuttered window behind them, soft yet restrained, as if illuminating the tension between creation and confinement. The painterly texture lends the scene a dreamlike patina, where myth and modernity blur — the ancient rendered anew in quiet domestic space.
According to legend, Romulus and Remus were born in Alba Longa, the city of their grandfather Numitor, who had been overthrown by his brother Amulius. To prevent any challenge to his rule, Amulius forced Rhea Silvia, Numitor’s daughter, to become a Vestal Virgin, sworn to chastity. Despite this, she conceived the twins, traditionally said to be fathered by the god Mars, though some variations suggest the demi‑god Hercules or an unknown mortal man as their father.
In this artwork, the myth finds a contemporary echo — two figures sharing origin yet divided by fate. Their empty crowns suggest both loss and renewal, as if the seeds of empire and memory still grow from the ruins of their shared beginning.
