Title: Riding Into The Smoke – A Contemporary Urban Fine Art Wall Print Medium: Urban Photography Artist: Charles David
Riding Into The Smoke captures a moment in time, yet one you see almost every minute of every day. Everywhere you turn, the city hums with life: tuc‑tucs weaving between jeepneys, motorbikes and locals drifting in and out of bars and restaurants that spill onto the pavements. Overhead, crazy tangles of powerlines stitch the streets together in chaotic webs, buzzing above the constant movement below. Despite the decay, despite the noise, St. Juan’s soul feels intact — a place where heritage refuses to fade, where the past and present coexist in a vibrant, unruly dance that makes the town unforgettable.
Backstory – The Chaos of St. Juan, The Philippines
I shot this scene in St. Juan, a sleepy yet chaotic coastal town on the Philippine mainland, somewhere between Vigan City and Manila, using an old Canon S5 IS. Those CCD colours were worth every struggle; the camera may not catch every detail, but it always captures the emotion. As ever, the streets throbbed with tuc‑tucs, jeepneys and motorbikes, yet this moment unfolded in a quiet backstreet as a rider burst into the smoke drifting from BBQs, food stalls and the ever‑present unattended fires. He squeezed past me, horn blaring, giving me just enough time to point, focus and shoot—a true one‑shot moment.
Back in the studio, I knew the image could be pushed further to reveal its story, colour and mystery. Dynamic Auto Painter’s Aquarelle effect, combined with a salt‑in‑water breakup of the tones, brought exactly the smoky, enigmatic atmosphere I felt in that instant.

Why Collect This Print
Riding Into The Smoke is a strong acquisition for collectors who value authenticity, moody colour work, reality even when urban decay dominates the scene. The positioning of the camera with respect to the passing Tuc Tuc meant that the final frame depended on timing and technical discipline — qualities collectors often look for in serious urban photography. The moody colours, light, and setting give the artwork documentary credibility while still delivering a clean, contemporary aesthetic suited to modern interiors.
