Is painting portraits from photos cheating?

Painting portraits from photos and software is cheating!

A friend of mine told me the other day that painting portraits from photos and software is cheating! But who makes the call that something is a cheat or not?

My “paintings” tend to veer towards the expressive rather than try to be an accurate representation of the subject. I may not use an easel, canvas, pencil or paint but I still lay down brush strokes and I still interact with my painting as any artist would. Am I any less of an artist for taking this approach? Clearly I am a photographer first and foremost, that is what I do every day, but I do ike to experiment and create works of art from my photos.

The gallery below contains artistic works created from photos using Dynamic Auto Painter. Is painting portraits from photos and software cheating? What do you think? Use the comments box below to have your say!
