Title: Abstracted Reality – Brixham Trawler BM482, Torquay Harbour Medium: Abstract / Fine Art Print Artist: Charles David
Abstracted Reality – Fine Art Print
Abstracted Reality is a painterly fine art print that reimagines the Brixham trawler BM482 through a softened, dreamlike lens. What begins as a familiar working vessel moored in Torquay Harbour becomes a study in colour, movement, and emotional perception. The scene dissolves into abstraction, inviting the viewer to experience the harbour not as a literal place, but as a shifting landscape of memory and mood. Printed on museum‑grade archival paper with exceptional tonal depth, this artwork brings a contemporary coastal atmosphere into any interior.
About the Artwork
In this piece, the trawler BM482 is present yet transformed — its lines softened, its reflections blurred, its structure hinted at rather than defined. The harbour becomes a place of suggestion, where light, water, and form merge into a fluid visual language. This abstraction allows the viewer to linger in the space between recognition and imagination, where the mind completes what the eye only partially perceives. The result is a contemplative, atmospheric interpretation of Torbay’s maritime identity.
Back Story – From the Artist
Abstracted Reality grew out of my ongoing fascination with Devon’s working coastline — a place I return to again and again with a camera, a notebook, or simply a curious eye. BM482 is a real Brixham trawler, a proper working vessel with years of graft behind her. I’ve spent countless hours wandering Torquay Harbour and the wider South Devon shoreline, watching boats come and go, listening to the clatter of chains, and admiring the quiet choreography of harbour life.
There’s something endlessly compelling about these boats: the geometry of their rigging, the curves of their hulls, the scars that tell you where they’ve been. Lobster pots stacked in uneven towers, coils of rope, rust, paint, tide marks — it’s all part of a living, breathing workspace. That mix of order and chaos is what draws me in.
In this piece, abstraction became a way to capture that energy. I wanted to blend the everyday mayhem of the harbourside with the solid, purposeful presence of the trawler herself. Lines collide, colours overlap, and the familiar slips into something more dreamlike — yet still rooted in the real working world that inspires me.
Abstracted Reality is my attempt to honour the heritage, grit, and quiet beauty of South Devon’s fishing life. I hope it gives you a glimpse of the same fascination that keeps pulling me back.
