Title: Old Man of Storr Medium: Landscape Photography / Limited Edition Print   Artist: Stuart Chapman

This photograph shows the iconic Old Man of Storr from a distant viewpoint rather than from the summit trail. Rising dramatically from the hillside, the distinctive rock pinnacle stands against the rugged landscape of the Trotternish Ridge. The wider perspective captures the scale of the surrounding moorland, cliffs, and rolling terrain, emphasizing how the formation dominates the landscape. Soft natural light and the expansive setting create a sense of remoteness and grandeur, allowing the viewer to appreciate the landmark in its broader context. While the photograph wasn’t taken from the top of the walk, the distant vantage point offers a unique and atmospheric view that highlights both the rock formation and the dramatic scenery of the Isle of Skye.

Back Story – Old Man of Storr, The Isle of Sky

I took this photograph because I wanted to capture the beauty and character of the Old Man of Storr, even though I wasn’t able to complete the walk to the top. From a distance, the great pinnacle still commanded the landscape with an almost mythic presence, rising out of the Isle of Skye’s rugged terrain like a sentinel carved by time. Standing there, I could appreciate the dramatic rock formation within its wider setting — its scale, its solitude, and the way it anchors the surrounding hills.

The viewpoint offered a different kind of perspective, one that revealed not just the landmark itself but the sweeping scenery, shifting weather, and quiet atmosphere that make Skye so unforgettable. Long days on the island often mean hard treks, steep climbs, and the kind of wild beauty that rewards every aching muscle. Sustenance comes in simple forms: plenty of biscuits, endless cups of tea, and of course the usual hearty breakfast to kick‑start the day.

This image was captured with the Sony A7 MKIII paired with the Sony FE 100–400mm, a combination that allowed me to isolate the Storr while still honouring the vastness around it. I wanted to preserve that moment — the awe, the stillness, and the sense of being humbled by the landscape — and share it with others.

Why Collect This Print

Old Man of Storr is a piece for collectors who value atmosphere, scale, and the quiet drama of the natural world. Rather than presenting the landmark from the usual summit viewpoint, this photograph captures the Storr from a distance — allowing its towering form to sit within the wider sweep of Skye’s rugged landscape. The result is an image that balances grandeur with restraint, revealing the monument not as an isolated icon but as part of a vast, ancient terrain shaped by wind, weather, and time.

Collectors are drawn to this print for its sense of depth and stillness. The composition invites slow looking: the interplay of rock, hillside, and shifting light creates a contemplative mood that suits interiors favouring natural tones, clean design, and a touch of wilderness.

Printed on museum‑grade fine art paper with archival pigment inks, this artwork offers exceptional clarity, texture, and longevity. It’s a timeless piece — one that brings the spirit of the Isle of Skye into any space, offering a moment of quiet awe and a reminder of the landscapes that move us.
