Title: Sharpitor in B&W Medium: B&W Monochrome Photography Artist: Charles David
Sharpitor stands on the south‑western edge of Dartmoor, a jagged granite outcrop shaped by more than 280 million years of geological history. Formed deep within the Earth as part of the vast Dartmoor granite batholith, it has been sculpted by frost, wind and rain into the fractured, tiered blocks that define its silhouette today. Its name reflects its character: a tor of sharp edges, broken planes and dramatic contrasts — a natural structure that seems purpose‑built for monochrome photography.
For centuries, Sharpitor has served as a landmark for travellers crossing this part of the moor. It rises above the old Princetown road and looks down toward the remnants of the Plymouth–Princetown railway, whose track-bed still cuts through the landscape below. The surrounding slopes once formed part of Dartmoor’s tin‑working territory, marked by boundary stones and the faint traces of early industrial activity. Yet despite these human imprints, Sharpitor remains overwhelmingly a place of raw geology and weather.
Its summit offers sweeping views across Burrator Reservoir, Leather Tor and the rolling high moor beyond. The tor’s exposed position means the light is constantly shifting — clouds racing overhead, shadows sliding across the granite, sudden bursts of brightness revealing new textures. This interplay of form and atmosphere gives Sharpitor its enduring appeal to photographers. In black and white, its rugged surfaces, open vistas and ancient presence take on a timeless, almost archaeological quality, making it one of Dartmoor’s most compelling subjects.
Backstory – Sharpitor in B&W
On this trip, I worked deliberately in black and white, letting the moor strip itself back to form, texture, and tone. My Fuji x‑T1, paired with the Fuji 14–55mm f/2.8–4, proved the perfect companion: light enough for a long day’s hiking, yet capable of rendering the tor’s rugged geometry with crisp detail and a beautifully restrained tonal range.
I was out with Stuart Chapman and Alex Hamer, a full day of walking, talking photography, and chasing shifting weather across the high ground. Dartmoor never sits still — clouds tore across the sky, light opened and closed in seconds, and Sharpitor stood against it all, a dark silhouette one moment and a glowing ridge the next. Working in monochrome allowed the scene to breathe: the sweep of heather, the rough grain of the granite, the distant folds of the moor all reduced to pure visual rhythm.
This image is less about the place itself and more about the feeling of standing there — wind in your face, boots on granite, and the quiet certainty that some landscapes are meant to be photographed in black and white.
