Title: Don’t Go into the Light – Haldon Forest, South Devon Medium: Impressionist Fine Art Print   Artist: Charles David

Don’t Go into the Light is a fine art print depicting a moment of quiet drama within a sun‑struck woodland path, where two distant figures move slowly toward a radiant opening in the trees. The forest around them glows with warm, golden light, each tall trunk catching the sun like a column of fire, while long shadows stretch across the earth in soft, painterly strokes. This interplay of brilliance and darkness creates a sense of mystery — an invitation and a warning held in the same breath.

Rendered with an impressionistic touch, the scene captures the emotional tension of transition: the pull toward brightness, the comfort of the shaded path, and the timeless human instinct to seek meaning in the spaces between. The figures, small against the towering trees, add a sense of scale and narrative, suggesting companionship, exploration, or simply the quiet ritual of walking together through nature’s cathedral.

This artwork speaks to those who love atmospheric landscapes, symbolic storytelling, and the way light can transform the ordinary into something almost spiritual. Perfect for interiors that value depth, mood, and contemplation, it brings a cinematic stillness to any room — a reminder that every path holds its own kind of wonder.

Back Story – From the Artist

Don’t Go into the Light happened on one of those quiet afternoons in Haldon Forest when I wasn’t really chasing a photograph — just enjoying the trees, the air, and the rare moment when the Devon weather wasn’t plotting against me. The light was doing something beautiful: a soft, glowing haze drifting through the pines, turning the path ahead into what looked suspiciously like a doorway to another realm.

I was lining up a simple woodland composition, the path towards the open trees was the target element,  when two walkers and their dogs wandered into the frame, completely unaware that they were about to become the accidental stars of the moment. Normally I’d lower the camera and wait, but the way they moved toward that bright opening was too perfect to ignore. It looked cinematic, mysterious — the sort of scene you couldn’t stage even if you tried.

So I slowed the shutter, leaned into the atmosphere, and let the forest take over. The figures softened, the light flared, and the whole scene slipped into something dreamlike and slightly surreal. The name evolved as I thought about the film Poltergeist, you know, the part where the Psychic says “Don’t Go into the Light”. I had to have that title of course.

A fleeting moment, captured forever — and a gentle reminder that sometimes the best photographs happen when you stop trying to control the shot and simply follow the light… though preferably not into it.
